learn to Skate kicks off a little over a week from now.
In a little over a week our next semester of Learn to Skate will start. New this semester will be our Adult only classes from Basic 1 and above. We already have adults signing up. I think this will be a very popular class and spots are filling up fast for both youth and adult classes. We have made some additions to the online store and you can now enroll in classes and pay your $10 membership fee for US Figure Skating all through this site. The USFS membership fees are paid once a year. To register click here
A lot of first time skaters want to know more about how things work with our group lessons. Our group lessons meet once a week for 30 minutes. Skaters get 30 minutes of instruction and then have 30 minute practice session after class. All enrolled students also get a 6 punch open skate card that can be used at any of our Open Skating sessions during the 6 week semester. Each semester we have one week that is designated as “bring a friend” day. This allows enrolled skaters to bring a friend to class and the friend can participate in classes with the enrolled skater. You never know you may have a new skating buddy.
Skaters that have never skated or only have skated a couple times start in Basic 1. If a skater finds that Basic one is below they're skating level the instructor for the class will move them to a higher level class if needed.
The first week of the semester skaters in Snowplow (for tot skaters) and Basic 1 skaters are asked to arrive at the rink about 15 minutes prior to the start of class. The reason behind this is that the instructor will go over some of the basics with the class off the ice prior to the class starting. Things like marching, and the proper way to fall and get up from a fall on the ice. It is extremely beneficial for skaters to learn this before they get on the ice for the first time.
Something else we do the first week of the semester is the Parents Pow Wow. After the class and during the skaters practice session Skating Academy staff hold a parents meeting in the parents overlook. During this brief meeting we go over information for that semester, go over testing that will take place at the end of the semester and answer any questions the parents may have. We encourage parents to attend this brief meeting. For more information on the skating academy or to ask questions don’t hesitate to contact us.
Learn to Skate Starts Tomorrow
Tomorrow starts our first round of Learn to Skate Group Lessons. We do our program a little differently then most other rinks. Our classes run 30 minutes in duration with a 30 minute practice time after class. Participants still get a 6 punch card to come to any of our open skate sessions for additional practice time if they wish. The reason we do the practice session after class is so the skaters that can’t make it back to practice aren’t at a disadvantage.
A lot of parents ask or want to know what to expect on the first class. Try to arrive at the rink at least 10 to 15 minutes early for the first class. This way if for some reason the front desk needs you to complete paperwork you have plenty of time.
If you are in Basic 1 or have children in Snow Plow please be at the rink ahead of your class time. Generally about 5 to 10 minutes before class your instructor will go over the some of the basics off ice such as falling and the proper way to get up when you fall. Then the class will meet on the ice at your class time for you lesson.
We hope you enjoy your Learn to Skate class and have fun! Always know that if you have any questions about anything that is going on in class the instructor or skating director will always have time for questions or any concerns you may have.
