Grand Junction Business Aims to Bring “Green Rink” to
Colorado’s Western Slope
August 25, 2010 – Grand Junction, Colorado: Grand Junction-based On Edge Skating is heading up a movement to bring ice skating back to the Grand Valley. “On Edge Skating is a business for skaters by skaters,” owner Charles Crawford said. On Edge Skating has been looking for investors for the project for over a year, but with the recent closure of the Grand Valley’s only skating rink, a greater sense of urgency has been added to their plan.
“We want to open a rink with a new, improved version of synthetic ice,” said Crawford. “Synthetic ice has several advantages over traditional ice, which include lower up-front and operational costs and less negative impact on the environment. Unlike other groups in the area, we’re trying to bring an environmentally friendly ice skating option to Western Colorado.” Synthetic ice has been on the market for some time. Crawford was involved in some of the original test markets for early versions of synthetic ice. He admits that the early products were not much like skating on real ice but the technology has, “come a long way since those days.”
“Not all synthetic ice products are equal, but after extensive research we feel that we have found the best available product and we have developed a relationship with the manufacturer of the surface," Crawford continued. “Today’s synthetic ice products allow skaters to be able to do anything on it that can be done on traditional ice, including figure skating jumps and spins, as well as playing hockey. Also, synthetic ice uses considerably less energy, water and chemicals than traditional ice surfaces.”
Crawford and his business are hoping to find investors in the near future so that local figure skaters and hockey players will no longer need to drive one and a half to two hours to get on the ice. Skating offers a great recreational option for local youth. Interested individuals may contact
Crawford via e-mail at charles@onedgeskating.com or by calling (970) 589-7706 and learn more about the project at www.onedgeskating.com
